Holiday in Bangkok - 8 November 2008

We woke up bright and early to have breakfast, then set off to Chatuchak Weekend Market - we got there at 9-ish. The place is huge but since we'd had enough rest the night before, we were ready!

Dila at the main entrance of the market.. A little bit of background on the market..
A map of the market shows how huge it really is!

We walked around, browsing and picking up stuff every now and again. It was a sunny day and it started getting pretty hot by noon. As excited as we were with all the stalls, we were starting to tire in the heat.. So, we stopped for lunch at 1-ish..
We found this stall that served halal food and they had quite a spread.. a variety of briani rice, somtam (young papaya salad), tomyam, curry & sambal dishes, a variety of noodles.. and, really great local coffee!

I had rice with prawn sambal with petai and a side order of somtam while Dila had tomyam noodles. I had been forewarned by the lady (who seemed like the owner) that the sambal was spicy and I thought she meant "spicy for the tourist" kind of spicy but... oh, no.. it was SUPER spicy, man! My ears were ringing and my tongue was almost on fire!! Dila, on the other hand, seemed to be enjoying her meal as it was bearable spicy and she was pleasantly surprised to find young coconut slices in her tomyam.. Like I'd mentioned earlier, the local ice coffee rocked!

Since the market is so huge, free transportation is actually provided.. I reckon to "save" the tourist who had gotten lost and bring them to where they needed to go.. like to the nearest ATM machine or the entrance that they can't seem to find!

The local authority guys patrol the vast area on the Segway Human Transporter. Cool!
After lunch, we continued walking around the rows upon rows of stall and we finally decided to call it quits as it had gotten really, really hot and we (me more so!) were drenched in perspiration! Since it was only 3-ish, we decided to head on over to JJ Mall right next to the market so we could still do a little more shopping but in the comfort of air-conditioning (and conveniently located toilets!!). The stuff at the mall were pretty similar to what was at the market but perhaps just a teeny weeny bit more price-wise.
Stopped to take some pix of some really nice furniture enroute JJ Mall.. Sadly, these are not the kind of furniture that I can ever have in my home - my kitties would be happily thinking, ".. ah, look new scratching posts!"

Thai BBQ seafood sold in front of the mall..

Heading to JJ Mall turned out to be a really good move for a number of reasons.. we got to cool off big time.. we didn't have to hunt for a (nice, clean) toilet, we still managed to find cheap things to buy and... it started to rain not long after we got into the mall!

After a bit of shopping, we stopped at the food court to rest our now tired feet, have a drink and some dessert. Dessert, mango & durian served with glutinous rice and cocnut milk, tho' a little too rich and sweet was still yummy great!

We left the mall at close to 7pm and headed back to the hotel for much needed shower. Checked my text messages and there was one from Air Asia telling us that our flight out of Bangkok the next was was delayed by an hour! Aw, man.. that meant that we'd get back to KL at close to 11pm.. Ah, well.. thank goodness Dila & I took the day off the next day too. After a nice shower and a bit of a rest, we were off for dinner at the seafood place we'd seen the night before.

The meal was really, really good.. We had lala cooked in chilli paste and basil, stir fried mixed vege in oyster sauce with prawns and Thai BBQ squid.. all that (plus white rice and drinks) for only THB290! Man.., if we'd stayed another night, we would've SO gone back for more!

The resident cat paid us a visit but he seemed to be more interested in "chatting" than food!

We did good with the food - we finished every bit! Dila looking extremely contented!
Stuffed and tired, we didn't bother visiting the night market and decided to head straight back to he hotel, making only 1 stop at the 7-11 to get some water and munchies.
View of the hotel lobby by night..

We got back to our room, checked out our purchases for the day for a bit, watched a little TV and turned in for the night..
